Intussusception

An intussusception occurs when a section of intestine inverts itself into the lumen of an adjacent section. This is usually caused by an alteration in normal muscular motility. Although it can be seen in other sections of the gastrointestinal tract, a small intestinal intussusception is more common in foals and can lead to loss of blood supply to the interior segment and leakage, usually requiring removal.
